Walter R. Stauffer papers, 1883-1914.

Papers of Walter R. Stauffer consist of several receipts issued to Stauffer for registering the birth of four children with the Office of Board of Health and Recorder of Births, Marriages, and Deaths of the Parish of Orleans; a notarized affidavit of William Henry Hawkins, formerly a slave of General Dick Taylor, U.S. President Zachary Taylor's son, at Fashion Plantation in St. Charles Parish, providing testimony regarding the amount of sugar, cattle, slaves, and military uniforms at the plantation prior to its seizure by federal troops near the end of the Civil War; another affidavit by Washington Kelly, also a former slave, that offers a similar estimate of the amount of sugar and livestock at the plantation; and a brief typewritten account of the Stauffer family's Swiss origins and its emigration to the United States.The notary public before which the affidavits were sworn is Felix J. Puig.
