As partial successor to the Massachusetts District Police Force, the Division of State Police performed the funcion of that body's Detective Dept.; in this capacity under direction of the commissioner of public safety it assisted in investigations leading to the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti and in those relating to appeals of the trial verdict, 1921-1927, creating this series. Files include: boxes 1-2--documents (depositions, correspondence, reports) produced during these investigations, surveillance of the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee and the funeral of Sacco and Vanzetti in 1927, and investigation of the bombing of the home of trial judge Webster Thayer in 1932; transcripts of wiretaps conducted in 1927 by the State Police under authorization of the attorney-general of telephone conversations of Felix Frankfurter on behalf of the defense committee; partial trial transcript with lists of witnesses and exhibits; related photographs and defense committee publications; box 3(2)--copies of publications and correspondence relating to trial evidence, 1950-1976; box 3(3)--press release, chronology, and inventories relating to public release of documents by State Police in 1977; box 3(4)--correspondence relating to use and copying of files, 1977-1978.
