World War I pamphlet collection, 1917-1919.

Pamphlets and fliers, 1917-1919, created by different groups that offered services to men in the military during and after World War I. Most of the literature in the collection are products of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The YMCA pamphlets include a swimming manual, inspirational/religious tracts, devotional calendars, vocational counseling literature, and works warning against the evils of such vices as gambling, profanity and sexual promiscuity. Additional groups represented in the collection include the American Legion, the American Library Association (ALA), and the Dept. of Interior's Board of Education. The American Legion leaflets are by and about the group and were written to attract members to the group's ranks. The Bureau of Education fliers are all lists of suggested readings for men interested in continuing their education. The ALA literature is composed of fliers with vocational lists and press release correspondence on the services the ALA provided during the war. Other pamphlets in the collection include an information pamphlet on the work of the Commissions on Training Camp Activities; a Red Cross pamphlet on the need for public health nurses; and devotional calendars issued by the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Association. One final, particularly interesting pamphlet to note is a "Parley Voo Booklet" of "practical French and German phrases" published by the Kolynos Dental Cream Company. Pamphlets dealing with specific events of World War I and World War I veterans and their reunions are located in the Pamphlets--Subject Vertical Files of the Dept.
