Herbert Eugene Bolton was born on July 20, 1870 in Wilton, Wisconsin. He became Director of the Bancroft Library in 1916, and head of the History Department at Berkeley in 1919. Biographical Information Edwin Bolton Edwin Bolton emigrated from England to the United States around 1850 with his parents John and Harriet Latham Bolton, eventually settling as farmers near Wilton, Wisconsin in 1856.
