Reverend Richard Furman, Jr. was born October 10, 1815 in Sumter, South Carolina. He was the seventh child of Wood Furman and Hannah Bowers. He was related to the noted Baptist minister and Revolutionary War patriot Rev. Dr. Richard Furman (1755-1826). He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1839, and taught and served as the principal for a preparatory school in Tuscaloosa.
