This series consists of reports and publications created as a result of various relief projects, many of which were conducted under the auspices of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA); the Works Progress Administration; and the Work Projects Administration (WPA). This series was originally maintained by the FERA and then moved to the WPA after the FERA ceased to exist. The topics of the reports and publications include, but are not limited to: agriculture, arts and crafts, civil defense, economics, education, engineering, medicine, public health, science, social science, state guides, and state histories. Some publications include long term improvement plans and projections dating to 1949. This series also includes publications from the Federal Writers' Project, the Civil Works Administration, and the National Youth Administration.

Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell was born in Bristol, England, in 1821 to a politically outspoken father committed to fairness among his male and female children. In 1832, Samuel Blackwell moved his family to the United States in part for financial reasons but also to participate in the abolitionist movement.
