John Thomson Mason was born in Virginia on January 8, 1787. He was educated at Charlotte Hall Academy, Maryland and William & Mary College, Virginia as a lawyer. In 1830 Mason was appointed Secretary of Michigan Territory, but soon resigned his office to engage in promotional activities in Texas, which occupied him until his death of cholera at Galveston in 1850. John T. Mason was the father of Michigan's first governor, Stevens T. Mason.
