Robert Mills Chapman (1918-2009) was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in nearby Oak Park. A graduate of Northwestern University, he began his 44-year career as U.S. Geological Survey geologist with a stint in Alaska. His fieldwork concentrated primarily in northwestern and interior Alaska. He subsequently transferred to the USGS office in Menlo Park, California, from which he retired in 1986.
