The Illinois Service Recognition Board (1921-1927) was created by the General Assembly (1921) to provide compensation to World War I veterans or their survivors. Consisting of the Governor, State Treasurer, and Adjutant General, this board administered bonus payments financed by a voter-approved bond issue (1922) for which the General Assembly appropriated funds in 1923. This compensation act was amended by the General Assembly in 1925 to include all active service death beneficiaries regardless of how long the veteran may have served in the armed forces. When the General Assembly abolished the Service Recognition Board (1927), all board records were transferred to the Adjutant General, who retained them until 1955 when the General Assembly directed they be deposited at the State Archives.
