Born in Marietta, Georgia. Dr. Barkalow received a B.S. in Chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1936. Three years later, he received an M.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Following the War, he received a Ph.D. in Zoology at Michigan. Dr. Barkalow became a professor of zoology at N.C. State College from 1947 until his retirement in 1979. He also served as head of the department from 1950 to 1963. During his career at N.C. State, Barkalow had teaching and research responsibilities in both the Zoology Department and the School of Forestry. His extensive research resulted in many publications, especially on the american gray squirrel. He also served on numerous private environmental organizations and state conservation commissions.

His extensive research resulted in many publications, including a definitive study of the gray squirrel which was published in 1973. Dr. Barkalow received many honors and awards during his career. In 1979, he became the first member of the N.C. Wildlife Conservation Hall of Fame for his "lifetime of dedicated service" to wildlife conservation. He also served on numerous private environmental organizations and state conservation commissions.
