Hansen, Godfred, 1876-1937
Variant namesGodfred Hansen was born in Copenhagen in February 1876. He served a s am ember of the Norwegian Northwest Passage Expedition, 1903-1906 (leader Roald Amundsen) which saw expedition ship Gjøa become the first vessel to successfully navigate a passage. Hansen returned to the Arctic in 1919 when he was placed in charge of the expedition which sought out deposits for Amundsen's North Pole expedition. Hansen died in May 1937
