Matrix was established in 1921 as a local fraternity for women journalism and communications students at the University of North Dakota. In May 1947, Matrix organized as the Beta Alpha Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi, a national honorary society for women in journalism and communications. In 1972 the national organization was renamed Women in Communications, Inc.
