Shirley Stanley was born December 29, 1931 in Bluffton, Ohio. After attending Miami University, Ohio State University, and Northwestern University, she received a B.S. with distinction in 1964 from the College of Education at the University of Minnesota. Professor Stanley earned an M.A. in Library Science (1970) and an M.A. with a concentration in English (1975) from Minnesota.
She began her professional career at the University of Minnesota Libraries in 1968 as a librarian and head of reserves in Wilson Library. Professor Stanley moved to the Reference Department in 1970, and in 1978, she began working with book selection for sociology and social work, taking on the full-time position as bibliographer for those academic departments in 1983. She continued her work with sociology and social work providing collection development and specialized instruction and reference as well as departmental liaison duties until her retirement in 1995.
In the mid-1970s, Professor Stanley developed and coordinated a successful collaborative library instruction course called BEGINNING LIB, which ran in the University’s student newspaper, “Minnesota Daily.” The course was one of the first newspaper courses in library instruction.
Shirley Stanley died July 7, 1996.
