Willard Andrew Collins was born on 26 December 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama. He earned his B.A. degree in 1967 from Samford University (Birmingham, AL). He earned his M.A. in 1968 and Ph.D. in 1971 from Stanford University. Dr. Collins joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1971 as an assistant professor in the Institute of Child Development, College of Education. In 1982, he was named director of the Institute. Dr. Collins is considered an expert on adolescent learning and development.
