John Emory Rylander, Confederate soldier, was born September 15, 1836, in Macon, Georgia, and was killed June 2, 1864, at Cold Harbor, Virginia. He was a graduate of Emory College (1855) and at the start of the Civil War, joined the Muckalee Guards from Sumter County, Georgia (Company A, 12th Georgia Infantry Regiment) as a first sergeant. He later transferred and became a major with Company C, 10th Georgia Infantry.
