Joseph E. Meyers (1858-1937), the son of William D. and Mary Warner Meyers, was a Conservative Orthodox Quaker, raised in Pennsdale, Pennsylvania, as a member of Muncy Monthly Meeting. He attended Westtown School and worked as a school teacher and, later, farmer in Iowa and Ohio. He was a member of Stillwater Monthly Meeting of Friends for much of his life.

Joseph Meyers lived and farmed near the Scattergood School in Cedar County, Iowa from 1892 to 1907. In 1907 he moved to Ohio and rented the Iowa farm until the 1930s. He was active in local and yearly Quaker meetings. He compiled a collection of biographies of Iowa Friends active between 1880 and 1907.
