Lumber firm, founded 1859 by Allen Towle, whose brothers, Edwin W. and George Washington Towle, became his partners; mill operations began at Dutch Flat, in Placer County, Calif., and expanded to several locations in Placer and Nevada counties; eventually the firm also owned lumber yards for retail sales, manufactured pine containers for agricultural products, and founded the town of Towle, which served as its distribution center. The firm was sold in 1902.
