Myron Emory Nimrod ("M. E. N.") Howell (1833-1888), a native of Palmyra, New York, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1858. He worked for the Pontiac Gazette until 1862 and then served in the Union Army. After the Civil War, Howell worked for the United States General Land Office in Washington, D.C. In 1872, he moved to Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where he worked for the Saint Cloud Press until mid-1873, when he returned to Michigan. He later resumed his work for the Land Office.
On April 5, 1864, Howell married Ida Amelia Mott of Alburgh, Vermont, the sister of Michigan alumnus Judd Mix Mott (1834-1863). Ida remained in Washington, D.C., with their daughter Libbie while Myron lived in Minnesota and Michigan in the early 1870s.
