Authorized November 13, 1775 in the South Carolina State Troops, the regiment was organized during late November and early December at Charleston, South Carolina to consist of three companies from the Charleston area. The Fourth South Carolina Regiment was incorporated into the Continental Army on June 18, 1776 and assigned to the Southern Department. Expanded into six companies on October 18, 1776, the Regiment was captured by the British Army at Charleston May 12, 1780 and disbanded January 1, 1781. Companies in the Regiment were commanded by Lieutenant Colonel (later Colonel) Owen Roberts, Lieutenant Colonel Motte, and Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Barnard Elliott.
