The Hardaway Contracting Company won the contract to build Lock and Dam No. 17 on the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa County (Ala.). This Columbus (Ga.) contracting company began work on the locks and dam in 1911 and work was completed on Dec. 23, 1914. The dam was named the Bankhead Lock and Dam in honor of John Hollis Bankhead, U. S. senator from Alabama.
