Arctic Winter Games Corporation was incorporated in 1968. The first Games were held in Yellowknife in 1970 and have continued biennially. In 1977 Alaskans incorporated the Arctic Winter Games Corp. of Alaska to coordinate the Alaska contingent in the Games. This organization changed its name to Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska in 1991.
The philosophy of the Games is to promote athletic competition, cultural exhibition and social interchange. Alaska hosted the games in: 1974, Anchorage; 1982 & 1988, Fairbanks; 1996, Chugiak-Eagle River.
