The Dept. of Military Affairs was created in 1973 (Ch. 73-93, Laws) succeeding the Military Dept. which was created in 1921 (Ch. 8502, Laws). The head of the Dept. of Military Affairs is the Adjutant General. The Department and the Adjutant General control the Florida units of the National Guard; supervise all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transport and subsist any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Department and the Adjutant General maintain their headquarters in St. Augustine. The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws.)
