Walter T. Kerwin graduated from West Point in 1939. He served in Africa, Sicily, Italy and France during World War II (WWII) and was wounded at Mutzig, France in Dec. 1944. He held numerous strategic assignments following WWII and rose to the rank of general. He was chief of staff for the United States (US) Military Assistance Command in Vietnam and commanded II Field Force Vietnam (1968-1969). He commanded Forces Command (FORSCOM) before being appointed vice chief of staff of the Army in 1974. He retired from service in 1978.
