The four-year Medical College of Alabama, a unit of the University of Alabama, began operations in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1945. In 1969, the Alabama Legislature renamed the programs the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Today, the School of Medicine is part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. James A. Pittman served as dean of the School from 1973 to 1992.
