Variant namesThe State Board of Education was created under the 1868 Constitution (Article VIII, Section 9). Its members were the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Secretary of State, and the Attorney General. The State Board was the head of the Dept. of Public Instruction. Under the 1885 Constitution (Article XII, Section 3), the State Board was composed of the Governor, the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the State Treasurer, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction; and it headed the State Dept. of Education. In the 1968 Constitution (Article IX, Section 2), the State Board was reformed to consist of the Governor and the Cabinet members; and it became the head of the Dept. of Education.
The State Board of Education is the chief policy making and coordinating body of public education. It determines, adopts, and prescribes the policies, rules, regulations, and standards required by law or needed to improve the state system of education. It manages the school lands held by the state and administers the state school funds.
