David S. Palermo came to the Penn State psychology department as assistant professor in1963, gained full professorship in 1966 and retired in 1992. Palermo researched in the field of psycholinguistics and authored numerous papers on language and cognitive development in children. He was editor of the national bimonthly Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, editor of Child Development Abstracts and Bibliography, and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior. He co-directed the Laboratory for the Study of the Symbolic Processes. He also co-edited the book Research Readings in Child Psychology and co-authored Word Association Norms: Grade School through College. Palermo received a Career Development Award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
