Palmer Memorial Institute was founded by Charlotte (Hawkins) Brown in Sedalia, N.C., in 1902; after graduating more than one thousand African Americans, the school closed in 1971, ten years after Hawkins Brown's death; Bennett College purchased the campus in 1980 and it is now the site of the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Memorial.
