Instruction in city planning was offered in the School of Landscape Architecture beginning in 1909. In 1923 a program of study leading to a formal degree was initiated. A separate School of City Planning was organized in 1929, and the Charles Dyer Norton Chair of Regional Planning founded at that time. When the Graduate School of Design was established in 1936, the Department of Regional Planning was formed. In 1954 it became the Department of City Planning and Landscape Architecture; in 1956 it was renamed the Department of City and Regional Planning. In 1980 the department was under the John F.Kennedy School of Government's Program in City and Regional Planning. An Urban Design and Planning Program was maintained within the Graduate School of Design.
