David Ferguson was commissioned by Christian Salvesen and Company to conduct a mineralogical and geological examination of South Georgia, which he carried out from January to April 1912. Whalers helped him by making additional collections in the South Orkney Islands. From 1912 to 1913, he conducted a mineralogical and geological reconnaissance from the whale-catcher Hanka of the South Shetland Islands, Palmer Archipelago and Danco Coast for the same company.
