Radio operator, Commander.
Commander Howard Wagar was born in Fairmont, Minnesota in 1906. In the 1920s, during the infancy of commercial radio, he worked for WAAM, a radio station in Newark, New Jersey. After receiving his radio operator's license in 1928, Wagar worked as a radio operator in the merchant marines and at various radio stations. In 1943, he joined the Navy and served until 1966. During his time in the Navy, Commander Wagar participated in some of the United States military's most sensitive scientific missions: the Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests, the Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missle Project, and the Apollo Space Project.
