Katherine Louise Prestwood Smith of Caldwell County was a commercial student at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro) during the 1934-35 academic year, completing the one-year program in 1935. During her time at the college, she was a member of the Y.W.C.A. and the Alethian Society. After completing her training, Smith began working for the Broyhill Furniture Company and during her walk to work she met Bruce Beach Smith, whom she married in 1936. Bruce and Katherine Louise lived most of their lives together in Caldwell County until her husband passed away after nearly 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Smith moved to Richmond, Virginia in 2002 to be near her daughter and died there on April 4, 2004.
