Robert Hugh Cole was born in 1914 in Oberlin, Ohio and died in 1990 at Brown University where he was Professor Emeritus. He had taught and done research at Brown University for 43 years. He received a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1935 and Ph.D. in 1940 in physics from Harvard University. He first became associated with Woods Hole Oceanographical Institution in 1941 when he became a research supervisor in the Underwater Explosives Research Lab (UERL), where he worked with Paul Fye and John S. "Spike" Coles and others. In 1946 he went to University of Missouri to teach physics. and in 1947 to Brown University.
