On May 5, 1928, a meeting was called by the Grinnell Chapter of the American Association of University Professors in connection with the annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science for the purpose of establishing a State Conference of AAUP Chapters. The suggestion first came from Dr. E. S. Allen, Iowa State College (University). Officers and additional members of an Executive Committee were elected, and were responsible for organizing a meeting to be held in the following year where they were to propose plans for a permanent state organization.
Officers elected were Chairman E. S. Allen, Iowa State College (University); Secretary Henry S. Conard, Grinnell College; and Committee, H. M. Kelley, Cornell College; L. W. Smith, Drake University; and E. W. Bartow, State University of Iowa.
