The University of North Carolina's Bureau of Public Records Collection and Research undertook a joint venture with the Library of Congress to collect and microfilm the early records of the states and to make this source material widely accessible. The resulting microfilm publication is "The Records of the States of the United States of America." Professor William Sumner Jenkins was Director of the Bureau of Public Records Collection and Research from its establishment in 1941 until his retirement from the University in 1967.
