Speyer, A. James.
A. James Speyer (1913-1986) attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, receiving a B.S. degree in architecture in 1934. In 1939 he became the first graduate student of Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology. After service in the U.S. Army during WWII, Speyer returned to Chicago to teach at IIT (1946-1961) as well as developing a private practice (1946-1957). In 1961 he was appointed the first curator of Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, a position he held until his death.
