A native of Belgium, Paul M. Kattenburg (1922-2004) served in the U.S. Foreign Service, 1950-1973, with postings to Washington, D.C.; Saigon, Vietnam; Manila, Philippines; Frankfurt, Germany; and Guyana, South America. In 1973, Kattenburg joined the faculty at University of South Carolina; named Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 1986, but continued to teach at USC as well as in several visiting professorships; also served periodically as an instructor the Semester-At-Sea program for the University of Pittsburgh.
