Norman Lindhjem was born in Oregon in 1916 and enlisted in the Army at Portland, Or. in December 1941. At the time of enlistment he had completed four years of high school and working as a truck driver. Lindhjem joined the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment at Fort Lewis, Wash. He participated in the Columbia Ice Fields test expedition in 1942, maneuvers at the Hunter-Liggett military reservation near Jolon, Calif. and as a rock climbing instructor at the Seneca Assault Climbing School at Seneca Rocks, near Elkins, W. Va. In spring 1945, Lindjhem was wounded in action during combat operations in Italy and received a Bronze Star medal.
