Mary of Modena (Maria Beatrice Eleonora Anna Margherita Isabella d'Este) was born in 1658 to Laura Martinozzi and Alfonso IV d'Este, Duke of Modena. She became the Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland as the second wife of James VII and II. Two of her children survived to adulthood: James Francis Edward Stuart and Louisa Maria Stuart. When James VII and II was deposed by William of Orange and Mary II, Mary went into exile in France alongside her husband and children. When her husband died in 1701, her son became king in the eyes of the Jacobites, and Mary represented him for three years until he reached the age of sixteen. When her son James was asked to leave France as part of the settlement from the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), Mary stayed. Mary of Modena died of breast cancer in 1718.
