Alabama. Quartermaster General.

Hide Profile

The Quartermaster General was created by the Constitution of 1819, and from 1822 was elected for a four year term by the Legislature. His duties were "the care of all public stores, of arms, ammunition," etc. In 1837 the Military Code enlarged his duties to include the commissary general. From 1840 he was also a member of the Military Commission, consisting also of the Governor and the Adjutant and Inspector General.

In January of 1861 the Governor received the power to appoint the Quartermaster General. The Quatermaster General received the rank and pay of a Brigadier General, and two assistant Quartermaster Generals were added. Later in January the Legislature created two Quartermaster Generals. One was appointed by the Governor to work with volunteer forces in the event of war, and one was appointed to oversee the state militia only. The first named Quartermaster General was quickly absorbed into the Confederate States of America and in 1865 disappeared. From 1865 to 1877 the office languished, but in that year the office was revised as before the Civil War. Other minor changes occurred until the office was abolished and the duties absorbed into that of the Adjutant General in 1915.
