Michael Laurence Mark (born 1936) was a graduate student in the University of Michigan School of Music and a member of the Symphony Band. He was a clarinet player with the Symphony Band during the band's 1961 tour of the Soviet Union, Near East, and Eastern Europe. William D. Revelli and George Cavender directed the band during the 15 week cultural tour which was sponsored by the United States State Department.
Mark had a Bachelor's degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He went on to complete his Master's degree in Music Education in 1962 at the University of Michigan and later obtained his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1969. He taught music in Maryland public schools and was supervisor of music in two New York school districts. Years later he served as music professor at Catholic University of America, Towson University in Maryland, and eventually was Dean of the Graduate School at Towson.
Mark developed a career as a music educator and historian and is known for his contributions in this field with publications such a s Source Readings in Music Education History , Contemporary Music Education (1978), A History of American Music Education (1992), Music Education: Source Readings from Ancient Greece to Today (2002), A Concise History of American Music Education (2008), Music Education in Your Hands: An Introduction for Future Teachers (2010), and additional publications in serials in the field. He is a member of the Music Educators Hall of Fame, the National Association of Music Education, the Hall of Fame of Maryland Music Educators Association (2005), and was chair of the governors of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan School of Music.
