Hustvedt, Erling H.

Capt. Erling H. Hustvedt, the son of Vice Admiral Olaf M. Hustvedt, entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1937 as part of the class of 1941. He was dropped from the Academy due to an error in evaluating his eyesight and he subsequently received an engineering degree from MIT. After the outbreak of World War II he was commissioned as a reserve officer and assigned to the USS SOUTH DAKOTA. He was involved in the battles of Santa Cruz and Guadalcanal and in Atlantic Theater operations after the SOUTH DAKOTA returned to the U.S. for repair. He subsequently served as executive officer of the USS ELLIS and the USS McCALLA.
