Bradley, Dan Beach, 1804-1873
Variant namesPhysician and missionary. Obtained support of the King of Siam to pursue smallpox and cowpox vaccination programs in Siam, 1835-1873. Vaccinated several members of the royal family, but failed to win the support of the people for a general vaccination program.

Dan Beach Bradley was born in Marcellus, New York on July 18, 1804. In 1826, he underwent a religious conversion. He received the M.D. degree from the College of Physicians in New York City in 1833 and one year later married Emilie Royce of Clinton, New York. From 1834 until Emilie's death in 1845, the couple were missionaries in Bangkok, Thailand under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Bradley enjoyed success as a medical doctor, linguist, translator, printer, and newspaper publisher. He returned to the United States in 1847 and in 1848 married Sarah Blachly (1817-1893), an 1845 graduate of Oberlin College. The couple returned to Thailand in 1850. Dan Beach Bradley died there in 1873.
