Delaplaine, Joseph, 1725-1799

Hide Profile

Joseph Delaplaine was a merchant and Quaker minister from New York City.

Delaplaine was born about 1725 to Joshua Delaplaine Sr. and Esther Zane Delaplaine. He was recognized as a minister around 1750. To quote the memorial to him published by New York Monthly Meeting, "Although he travelled but little, he laboured much, in word and doctrine, and was often eminently favoured in the exercise of his ministerial gift, evidencing ... that his mind was fervently devoted to promote the cause of righteousness on earth."

In 1751 Delaplaine married Abigail Farrington of Shrewsbury Monthly Meeting. At some later point Abigail died and he remarried a woman named Hannah, possibly Hannah Childs, though details about this second marriage are unclear. Delaplaine died on June 12, 1799.
