Hull, Tiddeman, 1734-1795

Tiddeman Hull was a Quaker merchant who lived in New York City and the surronding area.

Hull was born in 1734 to Captain John Hull and Damaris Cary Hull of Jamestown, Rhode Island. As a young adult he moved to Purchase, New York, where in 1758 he married Elizabeth Franklin (also spelled Franklyn). The couple had eight children, including Tiddeman Hull Jr. (1759-1826) and Henry Hull (1765-1834).

In 1770 the family moved to New York City, where Hull was extensively engaged in business as a member of the firm of Hull and Franklin, importing merchants. In 1777 he retired and moved to a farm in Stanfordville, Dutchess County, New York, within the boundaries of Nine Partners Monthly Meeting. Hull became an active member of the meeting. In 1781 he appeared in the ministry, and over the next decade he made religious visits to families nearby and to monthly meetings in western New York and along the eastern seaboard

Hull experienced a near fatal fit of sickness in 1793, from which he gradually recovered. In 1795 he caught dysentery, and died on September 28.
