The goal of the Diabetes Branch is to reduce the high incidence of suffering, disability and death due to the complications of diabetes. The Diabetes Control Program was initiated in 1987 by the Dept. of Public Health through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control to identify and educate diabetics in Alabama. Pilot programs have been implemented in Jefferson, Mobile, Montgomery and Houston counties to deal with three complications of diabetes mellitus: diabetic eye disease, hypertension co-existent with diabetes, and lower extremety amputations.
