United States. Works Progress Administration. Historic Records Survey
Historical note: A survey of the state and local records by the Works Progress Administration began in Arizona March 1, 1936. From March 1 to October 15 the Survey functioned under the Federal Writer's Project with Mr. Ross Santee as State Director. Miss Estelle Lutrell, University of Arizona librarian, served as his assistant and supervised the survey operation. In October 1936, the Survey was removed from the Federal Writer's Projects and became a separate section of the WPA. At that time, Miss Lutrell became the Survey's State Director. The objective of the survey was to compile an inventory of the historical records in the state, counties, cities, and other local government units. After a week of training, relief workers conducted the survey in the Pima County area. All surveys were conducted in 1936.

Historical note: The W.P.A. Historic Records Survey was initiated to prepare inventories of state, county, municipal, town, and other public archives. In addition, other non-published historical materials located in semi-public and some non-public organizations were also to be included as well.
