The Abbe Museum (opened in 1928) is a museum focused on the history, culture, and archaeology, of Maine's Native Americans; presents exhibitions and education programs, cares for collections and archives, and conducts related research. Previous names of the institution include the Lafayette National Park Museum (1928-ca. 1931) and the Robert Abbe Museum of Stone Age Antiquities (ca. 1931-2001). The museum's photograph collections consist of ca. 40 archival albums, covering ca. 15 linear ft., with additional small collections of photographs stored in the Museum's paper archives.
