In 1990, Library administrative services - A. C. McClurg Bookstore, Computer Services, Facilities Management and Security, and Personnel Office - were placed under the supervision of the newly created position of Vice President for Finance and Administration, formalizing the responsibility of the Library's chief financial officer for functions auxilliary to library services.

From 1892 to 1963, the Financial Agent and Comptroller supervised the financial affairs of the Library. At various times since 1963, the Library's chief financial officer has also directed such administrative functions as maintenance, security, internal services, the bookshop, and computer services. This dual responsibility for financial and administrative affairs was formalized in 1990 with the appointment of a Vice President for Finance and Administration.
