Volunteers have played a strong role in the MFAH since its inception. In 1939, the Art Museum Guild was established to promote the museum and art education. The Junior League Docent Program began in 1943/1944. In 1961, the first class of Bayou Bend Docents was selected. The Department of Education oversees all aspects of docent recruitment, training and leadership at the MFAH.
