The Keweenaw Historical Society held its first meeting on May 16, 1912. The attendee₂s appointed L. L. Hubbard, Dr. A. F. Fischer, J. T. Reeder, L. A. Chase and J. A. Doelle to form a constitution and on June 11, 1912 the Society met and accepted this constitution. Their object was to "collect & preserve material bearing on the history of Keweenaw Peninsula, and to promote local historical study and research." This society covered Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Baraga counties. The first president was J. T. Reeder with J. A. Doelle as Secretary and Treasurer. There were nine Vice Presidents, including W. J. Uren of Houghton, Z. W. Wright of Hancock, Dr. A. F. Fischer of Hubbell, W. J. Smith of Mohawk, S. F. Brady of Rockland, O. W. Robinson of Chassell, Mrs. W. A. Childs of Calumet, Mrs. H. S. Goodell of Painesdale and Mrs. J. B. Smith of L'Anse. This society collected a variety of documents from the four counties (from "The Tree Climber," Vol. 7, No. 3, September 2006, accessed Feb. 2010). The Keweenaw Historical Society was disbanded in Oct. 1962.
